Emergency Pump Station Repair at a Nursery in Spencers Wood

The Challenge

A nursery in Spencers Wood experienced severe flooding due to a failure in its foul drainage system. The site was relying on a package pump station to move wastewater, but the equipment had stopped working correctly.

When Tom arrived on site, he discovered that the pumping system was in serious trouble. One of the submersible pumps had completely failed and was no longer operational. At the same time, the second pump was blocked, preventing it from functioning.

What We Did

The nursery needed to continue its daily activities, so Tom prioritised getting the system partially operational to alleviate the immediate flooding situation. He worked on the pump chamber to clear the blockage and address the fault with the failed unit.

A full repair was not possible during this initial visit due to the extent of the damage. However, Tom managed to get the system working well enough to handle the flow temporarily. This allowed the nursery to carry on with its operations while a more permanent solution could be arranged.

Why It Matters

Package pump stations are critical for properties that cannot drain by gravity alone. They use submersible pumps and float switches to lift wastewater from a chamber to the main sewer or a treatment plant. When these systems fail, flooding can occur rapidly, causing significant disruption and potential damage.

Pump failures are often caused by blockages from debris, solids, or foreign objects entering the chamber. Pumps can also suffer from mechanical wear, electrical faults, or float switch malfunctions. Regular maintenance is essential to prevent sudden breakdowns.

AFS provides comprehensive pump station services across Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, and West Sussex. Our engineers can diagnose faults, clear blockages, repair or replace pumps, and carry out full refurbishments. We also supply new package pump stations for commercial and domestic sites.
