Centrifugal pump services for complete systems

A centrifugal pump fault can be caused by the pump itself, but it can also originate in the motor, controls, valves, suction conditions or connected pipework.

AFS supports end-suction, close-coupled, multistage and water-transfer centrifugal pumps used in commercial buildings, farms, irrigation systems, plant rooms and industrial applications.

Our engineers assess the pump duty, flow, pressure, electrical supply, controls, valves, seals, bearings and operating conditions before recommending repair, servicing or replacement.

Where a replacement is required, the new pump should be selected against the actual system duty rather than simply matching the old model number.

For specialist pump work, our sister company Alton Pumps provides centrifugal pumps.

Fault diagnosis and repair

Investigation of low flow, loss of pressure, leaks, vibration, noise, tripping and failure to start or prime.

Planned pump servicing

Condition checks, performance assessment and maintenance recommendations to reduce unexpected failures.

Installation and replacement

Pump selection, installation, commissioning and system checks for new or replacement equipment.

How we assess a centrifugal pump system

Review the duty

We confirm the application, required flow and head, operating history and current symptoms.

Test the complete system

The pump, motor, controls, suction, discharge, valves and pipework are checked together.

Recommend the next step

We explain whether repair, servicing, alteration or replacement is the most practical route.

Centrifugal pump types and applications

The correct pump depends on the required duty and the conditions in which it operates.

Centrifugal pumps are commonly used for clean-water transfer, pressure boosting, irrigation, circulation, process water, drainage and other high-flow applications. Installations may use end-suction, close-coupled, inline or multistage pumps.

A suitable assessment considers flow, total head, suction conditions, fluid characteristics, operating hours, controls, redundancy and the available electrical supply.

Systems we support

  • End-suction centrifugal pumps
  • Close-coupled pumps
  • Multistage pumps
  • Water-transfer pumps
  • Irrigation and agricultural pumps
  • Commercial plant-room systems

Common centrifugal pump faults

Poor performance does not always mean the complete pump must be replaced.

Loss of performance may be caused by a blocked suction, air ingress, an incorrect valve position, impeller wear, seal failure, damaged bearings, motor problems, control faults or unsuitable operating conditions.

Checking the wider system prevents a replacement pump being installed into an unresolved pipework or control problem.

Typical symptoms

  • Low flow or pressure
  • Cavitation or vibration
  • Seal or flange leaks
  • Bearing or motor noise
  • Failure to prime
  • Electrical trips or overheating

Repair, servicing or replacement?

The best option depends on condition, age, availability of parts and the required duty.

Repair may be appropriate where the pump casing, motor and hydraulic components remain serviceable. Replacement is often more sensible where the equipment is obsolete, badly worn, repeatedly failing or incorrectly sized.

After installation or repair, the system should be commissioned and checked against the intended operating conditions.

Assessment points

  • Pump curve and duty point
  • Motor and electrical condition
  • Seal and bearing condition
  • Suction and discharge layout
  • Control and protection settings
  • Future servicing access

Centrifugal Pump Services FAQs

Do you repair centrifugal pumps?

Yes. We investigate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control-related faults before advising whether repair is technically and commercially sensible.

What centrifugal pump problems can you diagnose?

Typical issues include low flow, poor pressure, cavitation, vibration, seal leakage, bearing noise, motor faults, loss of prime and repeated tripping.

Can you service commercial and industrial pumps?

Yes. AFS supports centrifugal pumps in commercial buildings, plant rooms, farms, irrigation systems and industrial water-transfer applications.

Can you replace an obsolete centrifugal pump?

Yes. The replacement should be selected using the required flow, head, fluid, operating conditions, pipework and electrical supply.

Which areas do you cover?

We mainly support sites across Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex, Berkshire and surrounding parts of Southern England.
