If your property relies on a septic tank, regular emptying is an important part of keeping the system working effectively and helping to prevent overflows, blockages and unnecessary damage.
At Alton Facility Services, our septic tank emptying service includes the removal of up to 1,000 gallons of waste, carried out using specialist tanker equipment by our experienced wastewater team.
To make sure your appointment runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible, there are a few things we ask customers to consider before we arrive.
How Much Waste Is Included?
Our standard septic tank emptying service includes the removal of up to 1,000 gallons of septic waste.
This is suitable for many domestic septic tanks and treatment systems, but tank sizes and waste levels can vary significantly from property to property.
If you believe your tank contains more than 1,000 gallons, please let us know when booking. Providing an accurate estimate allows our team to advise you correctly and make sure the appropriate arrangements are in place before attending.
Septic Tank Access
One of the most important considerations when booking a septic tank empty is how easily our tanker can access the property.
Our standard service allows for up to 30 metres between the tanker and the septic tank.
For many properties this provides plenty of flexibility. However, septic tanks are sometimes positioned at the rear of properties, within paddocks, across gardens or in other areas that cannot be reached directly by a tanker.
If your tank is located more than 30 metres from where our vehicle can safely park, this does not necessarily mean we cannot complete the job.
Our team may be able to make alternative arrangements, but we ask that any longer-distance access requirements are discussed with us in advance so that we can arrive with the correct equipment and plan the job accordingly.
Can Our Tanker Access Your Property?
Wastewater tankers are larger vehicles, so it is important to consider access before your appointment.
Please let our team know in advance if your property has:
Narrow entrances or gateways
Restricted parking
Weight-limited or potentially weak driveways
Low-hanging branches or trees
Tight turning areas
Height restrictions
Soft or unstable ground
Limited roadside access
Any other access restrictions
Providing this information when booking helps us determine whether our tanker can safely reach the property and prevents avoidable delays on the day.
Where access is particularly challenging, photographs can often be helpful when discussing the site with our team.
Make Sure Your Septic Tank Can Be Located
Before our tanker arrives, please make sure you know where your septic tank is located and that the access cover is visible and accessible.
Where possible, vegetation, garden furniture, vehicles or other obstructions should be moved away from the tank cover.
This allows our engineers to begin the emptying process quickly and reduces the risk of delays while attempting to locate or access the tank.
If you are unsure where your septic tank is situated, please mention this when contacting us.
Why Accurate Information Matters
Every property and drainage system is different.
Providing us with as much information as possible at the time of booking helps us make sure we send the right vehicle, equipment and personnel for the job.
It also means you know what to expect before we arrive.
Information that is particularly useful includes:
Approximate tank size
Approximate waste level
Distance between the tank and vehicle access
Tank location
Type and condition of the tank cover
Any difficult access or parking restrictions
Whether the property has a septic tank or sewage treatment plant
The more information we have beforehand, the better prepared our team can be.
How Often Should a Septic Tank Be Emptied?
How frequently a septic tank needs emptying depends on several factors, including the size of the tank, the number of people using the property and the amount of wastewater being produced.
Regular emptying helps prevent excessive sludge build-up inside the tank.
Leaving a septic tank too long between empties can increase the risk of solids passing further through the drainage system, potentially affecting the soakaway or drainage field and leading to more expensive problems.
Warning signs that your tank may require attention can include:
Slow-draining toilets, sinks or showers
Unpleasant smells around the tank
Gurgling drainage
Wastewater backing up
Wet or unusually lush ground around the tank or drainage field
High levels visible inside the tank
Previous emptying intervals being exceeded
If you are unsure whether your system needs emptying, our team can advise you.
