Septic Tank Deep Clean Removes FOG Build-Up in West Byfleet

Alton Facility Services recently carried out a deep clean of a septic tank at a site in West Byfleet after significant levels of fats, oils and grease had accumulated within the system.

Commonly known as FOG, fats, oils and grease can enter wastewater systems through sinks, drains and commercial kitchen outlets. Over time, these materials can cool, solidify and collect within pipework, tanks and chambers, restricting flow and reducing system performance.

The Challenge

The septic tank had developed a substantial build-up of FOG, which was affecting its ability to operate effectively.

If left untreated, this type of accumulation can lead to:

Reduced tank capacity
Restricted wastewater flow
Persistent odours
Drainage blockages and backups
Increased pressure on downstream components
More costly repairs or emergency callouts

A thorough deep clean was required to remove the build-up and help return the system to a safe and serviceable condition.

Our Response

Our drainage team attended the site and carried out a detailed assessment of the septic tank.

Specialist cleaning equipment was then used to break down and remove the accumulated fats, oils and grease from within the system. The tank was cleaned thoroughly to improve flow, restore usable capacity and reduce the likelihood of further blockages.

The team also checked the system for any additional signs of restriction or damage before completing the works.

The Outcome

The deep clean successfully removed the FOG build-up and improved the overall condition of the septic tank.

The completed works delivered:

Removal of significant fats, oils and grease deposits
Improved wastewater flow through the system
Restoration of tank capacity
Reduced risk of blockages and backups
Lower likelihood of emergency drainage issues
Improved long-term system reliability
Preventing FOG-Related Drainage Problems

FOG does not simply disappear once it enters a drain. It can travel through the wastewater system before cooling and collecting inside pipes, chambers and tanks.

Reducing the amount of fats, oils and grease entering the drainage system, combined with routine inspections and planned cleaning, can help prevent disruptive and costly problems.
