Our very own Stu the Blockage Hunter was recently called into action at a residential property in Ascot, where root ingress had begun causing problems within the underground drainage system.
Although tree and plant roots may seem relatively harmless above ground, once they find their way into drainage pipework they can quickly become a much bigger issue.
Identifying the Cause of the Drainage Problem
Following investigation of the drainage system, root ingress was discovered within the pipework.
Roots will naturally seek out sources of moisture and can enter drains through small joints, cracks or defects in the pipe. Once inside, they can continue to grow and begin catching waste, debris and other material passing through the drain.
Over time, this can restrict the flow of wastewater and eventually result in:
Slow-draining sinks, toilets or showers
Recurring blocked drains
Gurgling noises from drainage systems
Unpleasant odours
Wastewater backing up
Complete drainage blockages
Even relatively small amounts of root ingress can therefore cause significant problems if left untreated.
Stu the Blockage Hunter Gets to Work
Once the obstruction had been identified, Stu got to work removing the root ingress and thoroughly clearing the affected drainage line.
Using specialist drainage equipment and plenty of experience, the obstruction was removed and the drain was cleared to restore the flow through the system.
This is exactly why identifying the cause of a drainage problem is so important.
Simply clearing an immediate blockage may get the system flowing again, but where problems continue to return, there can often be an underlying issue such as root ingress, damaged pipework, scale build-up or a defect within the drainage system.
Why Root Ingress Shouldn't Be Ignored
Root ingress rarely resolves itself.
Once roots have gained access to underground pipework, they can continue growing and potentially cause further obstruction or damage. Catching the problem early can therefore help prevent a relatively manageable drainage issue developing into a more disruptive blockage or repair.
Where a property experiences repeated drainage problems, a CCTV drain survey can be an effective way of inspecting the inside of the pipework and identifying exactly what is causing the issue.
Depending on what is found, the next step may involve professional drain clearance, root cutting, maintenance, drain repair or relining.
