Alton Facility Services recently completed a pump replacement at a site in Alton after the existing unit had reached the end of its working life.
During inspection, our engineer found that the pump was no longer operating reliably and that the float switches had broken away. As a result, the system could not function as intended and was at risk of backing up or triggering further faults.
The Challenge
A failing pump can quickly lead to more serious drainage issues, particularly when warning signs are not addressed early.
In this case, the ageing unit and damaged floats meant the system was no longer able to control water levels correctly. Without intervention, this could have resulted in:
System backup
Alarm activation
Increased risk of flooding
Further damage to associated equipment
Disruption to normal site operations
Our Response
Our engineer attended the site, assessed the condition of the existing equipment and confirmed that replacement was the most reliable solution.
The old pump was removed and a new unit was installed, tested and commissioned. The system was then checked to ensure it was operating safely and effectively.
The Outcome
The replacement restored the pump system to full working order and removed the immediate risk of failure.
The completed works delivered:
Removal of the end-of-life pump
Installation of a new replacement unit
Restoration of reliable system operation
Reduced risk of backups and alarms
Improved long-term system performance
A safer and more dependable installation
Preventative Pump Maintenance and Replacement
Pump failures often develop over time, with worn components, damaged floats and reduced performance acting as early warning signs.
Regular servicing and timely replacement can help prevent emergency callouts, site disruption and more costly repairs.
Alton Facility Services provides pump inspections, servicing, repairs and replacement for commercial and managed sites.

The update “Pump Replacement Restores System Reliability in Alton” relates to equipment that works as one system. Pumps, floats, controls, valves and discharge pipework all affect pump-station performance.
A high-level alarm or failed pump may be the first sign of a wider issue. Our engineers check the chamber and controls before recommending a repair or replacement.
Planned inspections can also identify worn parts, damaged floats and control faults before they cause an emergency or wastewater backup.
If you have a similar issue, send the postcode, a short description and any useful photos to AFS. We can then confirm whether a site visit, survey, service appointment or written quotation is the right next step.
