This update includes a YouTube video from Alton Facility Services.
Alton Facility Services recently carried out inspections of surface water oil interceptors on behalf of Surrey County Council.
These systems are often installed beneath car parks, roads and hardstanding areas, where they play an important role in preventing oil and other contaminants from entering the surrounding drainage network and local watercourses.
Although they are largely hidden from view, regular inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure they continue operating effectively.
The Challenge
Surface water runoff from highways, car parks and other hardstanding areas can collect oil, fuel and other pollutants.
Without an effective interceptor system, these contaminants may pass directly into the wider drainage network and potentially reach nearby rivers, streams or other watercourses.
The inspection was required to confirm that the interceptor was:
Separating oil and contaminants correctly
Allowing clean water to pass through the system
Free from faults or damage
Operating in line with its intended environmental function
Suitable to remain in service without repair
Our Inspection
Our engineer carried out a detailed inspection of the interceptor and assessed each stage of the system.
The first stage contained visible oil contamination, showing that pollutants were being captured as intended. The second stage was running clean, confirming that the interceptor was successfully separating contaminants before the water continued into the drainage system.
No repairs were required. However, cleaning of the first chamber was recommended to remove the accumulated contamination and maintain the interceptor’s performance.
The Outcome
The inspection confirmed that the interceptor was operating correctly and continuing to protect the surrounding environment.
The visit achieved:
Confirmation that the interceptor was functioning effectively
Successful separation of oil from surface water
Verification that clean water was passing through the second stage
Early identification of routine cleaning requirements
No immediate repair costs
Continued protection of the local watercourse
Improved confidence in the condition of the drainage asset
Preventative Drainage Asset Maintenance
Routine inspections help identify contamination, blockages and maintenance requirements before they develop into more serious problems.
A planned inspection and cleaning programme can help organisations maintain effective drainage systems, reduce environmental risk and support ongoing compliance.
Alton Facility Services provides inspection, cleaning and maintenance services for oil interceptors and other commercial drainage assets.
