Alton Facility Services recently completed the removal, diagnosis, repair and return of a large pump on behalf of Southern Water.
The project required careful planning from the outset due to the size of the unit and the challenging site access. The pump was positioned approximately 15 metres from the nearest area of hard standing, making a straightforward removal impossible.
Working alongside B&A Transport, our team coordinated the lifting and transport operation before bringing the pump back to our workshop for detailed assessment and repair.
The Challenge
The size and location of the pump created several practical challenges.
The team needed to:
Remove a large pump from a restricted-access location
Safely move the unit approximately 15 metres to hard standing
Coordinate specialist lifting and transport support
Avoid damage to the pump and surrounding site
Diagnose the fault once the unit reached the workshop
Complete the required repairs and prepare the pump for return
The operation required close coordination between our engineers and transport partner to ensure each stage was completed safely and efficiently.
Pump Removal and Transport
Our engineers, Mike and Fin, attended the site to prepare the pump for removal.
Due to the distance between the pump and the accessible loading area, specialist lifting and transport equipment was required. B&A Transport supported the operation, helping the team overcome the access constraints and move the pump safely from its installed position.
Once removed, the unit was transported to the Alton Facility Services workshop for further investigation.
Workshop Diagnosis and Repair
At the workshop, our team carried out a detailed fault diagnosis to identify the cause of the problem and assess the condition of the pump.
The required repairs were then completed, and the unit was prepared for its return to site. Carrying out the work within our own workshop gave the team access to the appropriate tools, facilities and controlled working environment needed to complete the repair effectively.
Return to Site
Following the successful repair, the pump was loaded onto the B&A Transport vehicle for its journey back to site and return to service.
By managing the complete process, from removal and transport coordination through to diagnosis, repair and return, Alton Facility Services provided a practical end-to-end solution for an essential item of equipment.
The Outcome
The project delivered:
Safe removal of a large pump from a restricted-access site
Successful coordination of specialist lifting and transport
Detailed workshop fault diagnosis
Completion of the required pump repairs
Preparation and transport of the unit back to site
Reduced need to coordinate multiple separate contractors
A complete pump support service from site to workshop and back again
We would like to thank B&A Transport for their support throughout the lifting and transport stages of the project.
